One person drowned while another 5 were rescued after a group of individuals were swept away by strong currents while bathing in the sea near the Ambalangoda Rest House.
Police said that the incident had occurred at around 12.45pm today (6) and that out of five persons admitted to the Balapitiya Hospital, one had died.
A doctor attached to the Elpitiya Hospital, his wife who is also a doctor at the Karapitiya Hospital, their two daughters (aged 3 and 2) and two other relatives were bathing at an unsafe location when the incident had occurred.
Officers of the Ambalangoda Police Station this morning had even informed the public of the danger of sea bathing at the location due to the rough sea these days.
The deceased has been identified as a 73-year-old retired administrative officer from Ambalangoda.
