
The Colombo High Court today sentenced a former officer of the Inland Revenue Department to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of bribery.
The accused, a former Assessor at the department’s Anuradhapura District Office, had been arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a businessman in 2004 for a reprieve in a tax case.
Colombo High Court Judge Sampath Vijayaratne also imposed a fine of Rs 9,000 and a penalty of Rs 15,000 on the defendant.
He had accepted the bribe to favorably resolve a case filed against the businessman for failure to pay taxes.
