Sri Lanka Police arrested 3,593 suspects including drunk drivers in a special island-wide operation in the early hours today.
Meanwhile 6,542 cases were filed for traffic offences during the police operation, which was carried out on the instructions of the IGP.
Some 17,155 police personnel had participated in this operation which had lasted for four hours from 3.00 am to 7.00 am today (8).
Police said that 451 persons were arrested for driving under the influence, 1,111 suspects were arrested over pending warrants, 947 suspects were arrested in connection with narcotics and illicit liquor while another 104 have been arrested on charges of consuming alcohol in public places and selling liquor without a permit.
Meanwhile two suspects were arrested for the possession of firearms wihtout a license and another 978 were arrested over various crimes.
