A leak has been detected on a fuel pipeline from a tanker to the Muthurajawela terminal, stated the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).
This was revealed when Ada Derana inquired CPC Chairman on a large oil spill observed in the sea near Thaldiyawatte area in Uswetakeiyawa-Wattala.
CPC Chairman Dhammika Ranatunga stated that action was taken immediately to repair the pipe and control the oil spill, when it was reported last morning (08).
The repairs could last for 3 days and required technical assistance and divers have been utilized for this task, said Ranatunga.
These repairs won’t affect fuel supply, however, immediate measures will be taken to minimize the damage to the environment, he further said.
Chairman of Marine Environment Protection Authority Rear Admiral (Rtd) Rohana Perera said that nearly 25 tons of oil have been leaked.
