Several media channels have reported false information on the Indian national arrested over his knowledge on the alleged plot to assassinate the President and former President including his family members, says the Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera.

Issuing a press release, the Minister pointed out there is no reported evidence regarding an attempt to assassinate the President Maithripala Sirisena, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and several others.

The CID recently obtained permission from the court to interrogate an Indian national, who was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act in connection with the alleged assassination plot.

Minister Samaraweera stated that the news reports carried by certain media on this are untrue.

The CID has not produced any evidence to the court to prove the existence of such an assassination plot, he added.

The press release emphasizes that the CID should conduct an extensive interrogation of the relevant incident as it poses a threat to the national security.

However, publishing serious information as such without confirmation is an inexcusable action, the press release further mentioned.

Meanwhile, the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka has issued a statement regarding the arrested Indian national.

The Indian High Commission has stated that an investigation regarding the Indian national was carried out based on the media reports on the arrest.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the relevant individual has had a history of mental disturbances since 2000, according to the Indian High Commission.
