Rear Admiral Dr. Sarath Weerasekara says that in the context where United States of America has withdrawn from the United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the resolution brought by the USA on Sri Lanka, too, should be abolished.
Speaking at a parallel session of the UNHRC session, he stated that the lack of main sponsor of invalidates the co-sponsorship of Sri Lanka as well.
Addressing the Chairperson of the council, he stated that the technical assistance given by the UN ended up accusing Sri Lanka of war crimes. This resolution was passed by the UNHRC without even taking vote or a debate, he points out.
That was because our delegate co-sponsored the resolution, said Weerasekara. However, neither the President nor the Cabinet gave the approval for this, he points out.
President Sirisena’s statement at UN General Assembly, requesting to resolve internal affairs of Sri Lanka independently, can only be validated if Sri Lanka withdraws from the 30/1 resolution, as we are bound to follow its recommendation, stated the Rear Admiral.
USA has withdrawn from this council accusing it as politically biased and hypocritical. And since America has withdrawn from the UNHRC, our co-sponsorship should also be nullified automatically, he further said.
