
Nearly 1,000 individuals from 300 families residing in line-houses in the Great Western Estate, Thalawakelle have been displaced due to the heightened risk of landslides owing to the downpours last night (02).
The displaced persons are currently lodging in the Sri Muthumariamman Hindu Temple of the estate, according to Ada Derana reporter.
Residents state that parts of rocks falling down the mountain could be heard along with the heavy rainfall that had occurred last night and, and that they evacuated from their houses since there had been a risk of landslides in the area for a long time.
Thalawakelle police has been deployed to ensure the security of the area and the authorities of the estate have provided relief for the displaced families.
Nuwara Eliya District Disaster Management Coordinating Unit has been informed of the current situation, Thalawakelle police said.
