The Court of Appeal issued an order to take up the appeals filed by former Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and former Director General of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) Anusha Palpita against the verdict of ‘Sil Cloth’ case, for consideration on October 12.
The appeal was taken up for hearing before a two-member judge bench consisting Justices Deepali Wijesundara and Achala Wengappuli.
The Court of Appeal also issued an order to produce all the documents, which are currently in the custody of Colombo High Court, related to the case before the court at the next appeal hearing.
Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita had been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 3 years and charged a penalty of Rs 5 million for the alleged misappropriation of Rs 650 million of state funds to distribute ‘Sil cloths’ to people during the presidential election campaign in 2015.
The Appeals Court later released the two defendants on bail, after they had appealed the verdict.
