
The government has decided to increase the award of scholarship money for the students from low-income families, who have passed the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination.
This implementation will be carried out in accordance with a Cabinet Memorandum submitted by the Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
Accordingly, the monthly allowance of Rs 500 granted for the students who have passed the Scholarship Examination will be increased to Rs 750.
In addition to this, the Cabinet of Ministers has granted the approval to award scholarships for the 250 students with special needs, who have passed the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination.
Commenting on this implementation, Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam stated that it is a duty and a responsibility of the government to further increase the subsidies provided in the field of education, despite the economic crisis faced by Sri Lanka at present owing to the global economic pressure.
