One person died after a train collided with a car this morning at a railway crossing on Nagarathna Mawatha in the Galle.

A slow train traveling from Aluthgama to Galle had collided with the car at around 6.25 a.m. today (12).

The driver of the car, a 57 year old resident of Ginthota, was rushed to the Karapitiya Hospital in critical condition following the crash, but he had succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment.

However, the driver’s wife who was also inside the car at the time had managed to escape unharmed as she exited the vehicle on sighting the oncoming train.

A female gatekeeper who had been employed at the crossing on a temporary basis says that she had signaled the car not to pass through the crossing as the train was coming.

However, the driver had failed to heed her warning and attempted to driver through resulting in the collision, she said.

Galle Police is conducting further investigations.
