
The underworld gang member identified as Ranasinghe Arachchige Hasitha alias ‘Banda’, who was critically injured and hospitalized following the recent shootout in Oruwala, had succumbed to injuries last evening (18).
A team of officers from the Police Organized Crimes Division had visited Oruwala area in Athurugiriya on October 04, in order to apprehend suspects of a criminal gang and the suspects had proceeded to open fire at them.
The police had then opened fire in return as an act of self-defense and the said underworld gang member had sustained critical injuries.
He was admitted to the prison hospital and subsequently transferred to Colombo National Hospital for further treatment.
He had passed away last evening at around 6.30 p.m., according to the police.
The deceased was considered a close associate of the notorious underworld figures ‘Makandure Madush’ and ‘Angoda Lokka’.
He is believed to have been connected to several major crimes that took place in the country in the recent past.
