Former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa questions as to why a commander who defeated the terrorism had to be called back to the country under war crime charges if the current government has won over the international community.
He mentioned this at an ‘Eliya’ seminar session held in Pitakotte yesterday (20).
Commenting on recent request of the UN to immediately repatriate a commander of the UN Peace Corps under accusations of war crimes, he says that, even during the civil war, Sri Lanka was able to send officers for UN Peace Corps.
Rajapaksa says that if the current government has won the world as they say, they should have been able prevent such an incident.
Had this had happened during the previous regime, we would have told them,’ if you don’t want this officer, send them all back’, further said former Defense Secretary.
However, today, neither the President nor the Prime Minister can take any decisions, he said.
He added that the current government doesn’t have the capability to remove the IGP in the context where a police officer had plotted to assassinate the President.
