Protests launched demanding plantation companies to increase estate workers’ basic wage up to Rs 1000 has caused disruptions in the vehicular movement on Hatton-Nuwara Eliya highway.
In support of the protest, all shops in Kotagala town have erected black flags and closed off for the day since this morning (25). This protest action has been organized by the Kotagala Trade Association.
Estate workers in tea plantations surrounding Kotagala-Hatton and shop employees, three-wheeler drivers and van owners in Kotagala town also joined the protest in support.
Parallel to this, another protest was held by the estate workers for the same cause, in Norwood, Hatton. Reportedly, black flags were erected at shops in Norwood town, as well.
Meanwhile, plantation companies have asserted Joint Committee of Plantation Trade Union (JPTUC) that they are can only increase the current basic wage of Rs 530 to Rs 600. However, the JPTUC have rejected the offer.
