
The Constitutional Council met up in the Parliament at 1.30 pm today (25), headed by Speaker of the Parliament Karu Jayasuriya.
At the meeting, vacant judiciary posts of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal were discussed extensively.
Two of the four names nominated by the President for the Supreme Court received approval of the Constitutional Council.
Also, Constitutional Council approved one of the four nominees of President for the Court of Appeal.
Meanwhile, appointment of new members for Independent Commissions whose terms of service have expired was also discussed at the council.
Accordingly, considering the efficiency of the Independent Commissions, extending the terms of service – under the maximum age limit of 80– of the current members of the commissions will be discussed with the President and arrived at a decision, as per suggested at the previous council meeting.
