The leave of Police personnel of all ranks have been cancelled with immediate effect until further notice, on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), said Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara.
IGP Pujith Jayasundara and other high-ranking police officers met with newly appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at latter‘s residence last night.
Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Joint Opposition members including MP Udaya Gammanpila were also present for the discussion.
The meeting took place just hours after Rajapaksa was sworn in as Prime Minister before President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday (26) at the Presidential Secretariat.
Prior to that Sirisena had removed Ranil Wickremesinghe from the position. However, the UNP leader called the move “illegal and unconstitutional” and said he was still the Prime Minister and would prove his majority.
The dramatic developments in Sri Lanka followed a breakdown in ties between Sirisena and Wickremesinghe, especially on policy issues related to economy and security.
