
Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya will not obstruct the newly appointed PM Mahinda Rajapaksa being allocated the Prime Minister’s seat in the Parliament at the next session, the Speaker’s Office said.
A meeting was held between President Maithripala Sirisena and the Speaker at the Presidential Secretariat last evening (31).
During the meeting, President Sirisena had responded positively to the explanation made by the Speaker at length on the need of immediate reconvening the Parliament and he has stated that his decision in this regard will be announced without delay.
Meanwhile, the President had drawn the attention of the Speaker towards the according of necessary facilities and privileges available in the parliament to the newly appointed Prime Minister.
The Speaker has, in response, stated that the state officials, as well as the parliamentary officials, will act accordingly, heeding the gazette notification issued by the President, announcing the new Prime Minister.
The Speaker has emphasized that there would be no obstruction from his side, to the duties performed by the parliamentary officials in the scope of their work, for the provision of necessary facilities to the position of Prime Minister, the Speaker’s Office stated in a statement.
