A police sergeant has been remanded until November 21 for providing contradictory witness statements with regard to a case against a heroin racketeer which is being heard before the Colombo High Court.
Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga has issued the order against a police sergeant attached to the anti-vice unit of Badulla Police.
A case had been filed at the Colombo High Court in 2016 against a suspect, who was arrested by the Maligawatta Police for the possession of 43.44 g of heroin and the police sergeant in question had been named as the 10th witness of the case.
It was reported that the witness had testified in favour of the defense, while responding in a manner that is disadvantageous to the prosecution and giving contradictory statements, when he was being cross-examined by the defense.
Taking this into consideration, Colombo HC Judge ordered to remand the suspect until November 21.
