Indian held with foreign currency worth over Rs 27 mn

An Indian national has been detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting smuggle out a stock of foreign currency.

 

The suspect, who had arrived in the country from Tamil Nadu, was preparing to leave for Singapore this morning (02) at 1.00 a.m. when the Customs officers attached to the BIA apprehended him.

 

Accordingly, the Customs Officers have seized foreign currency including 19,250 pounds sterling, 95,000 Euros, 71,500 Saudi Riyal and 21,000 AED estimated to be worth over Rs 27 million in total.

 

Meanwhile in a separate detection at the BIA, Customs officers have apprehended a Sri Lankan passenger, who attempted to smuggle out foreign currency worth over Rs 9 million.

 

The suspect, who resides in Nawalapitiya, was to leave for Dubai this morning (02) at 7.40 a.m.

 

The Customs officers have seized 19,250 pounds sterling, 29,000 Euros and 20,000 Swiss franc estimated to be worth over Rs 9.2 million in possession of the suspect.

 

Further investigations are regarding the incidents are carried out by the customs officers attached to BIA.
