
A suspect has been arrested for the possession of counterfeit currency notes amounting to Rs 250,000 in the Thekka Watta area in Vavuniya.
Vavuniya Police said that the arrest was seizure was made during an operation carried today (03) based on a tip-off received.
The individual was arrested while attempting to purchase cannabis from a cannabis dealer using counterfeit money, police said.
Four individuals had arrived together to make the purchase, however three of them had managed to escape during the police raid.
The suspect arrested with the fake currency notes has been identified as a 24-year-old youth from Puttalam.
A total of 50 counterfeit currency notes of the Rs 5,000 denomination were found in his possession.
The arrested suspect and counterfeit notes are to be produced before the Vavuniya Magistrate’s Court.
Vavuniya Police is conducting further investigations to apprehend the suspects who had fled.
