Lord Baron Naseby, a member of the British House of Lords, says he believes that Sri Lanka’s President was acting in the interest of the country when he sacked the prime minister and established a new government, a move which he admits was ‘unusual’ but not ‘unconstitutional’.

“I see nothing that has happened that is unconstitutional. It’s unusual. Yes. But we’ve had unusual things in the UK,” he said.

Lord Naseby made these comments in response to questions put forward regarding the present political crisis in Sri Lanka, during the unveiling of island nation’s new destination brand, ‘So Sri Lanka’, at the opening day of the World Travel Mart (WTM) 2018 in London, yesterday (5), which he attended as the Chief Guest.

“So these things happen. These things change. And I’m sure those who are involved, particularly the President, who is elected, an executive, he would have acted in the interest of the country. Of that I’m quite sure. I met him on a number of occasions. 

“I think he is a very wise man and I’m sure whatever actions he’s decided will have been in the interest of the country,” he reiterated. 

Lord Naseby, however, stressed that it is not for a foreigner to determine whether the President’s actions are constitutional or unconstitutional. 

“We as the UK, people who take an interest in Sri Lanka, of course want to help Sri Lanka,” he said.
