Former MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena says that the Parliament was dissolved by the President because the people of the country are expecting a general election.
“We did a survey and over 95% of the people are asking for an election,” he said speaking to reporters last night.
He stated that the public has been given the power and the public will decide and that no one can object to that.
Asked whether legal action can be taken against the dissolving of the Parliament, he responded with a question: “Can the Supreme Court say not to give the people an election?”
On the criticisms from the United National Party (UNP) regarding the move, Abeywardena said that if they are saying that giving the people an election is unconstitutional, that is astonishing.
He also said that following the dissolution of the Parliament only the Cabinet of Ministers will remain and continue to function while all other State and Deputy ministerial portfolios will be invalid.
“Ending this discontent is the biggest relief to the people. We will end this discontent,” he said.
