The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has reminded the Attorney General to inform the court in action taken with regard to the controversial statement made by State Minister of Education Vijayakala Maheswaran on the revival of the LTTE, says Ada Derana reporter.

Addressing a state event held at Veerasingam Hall in Jaffna on the 2nd of July 2018, former State Minister of Child Affairs Maheswaran had stated that the LTTE should be resurrected for the freedom of the Tamil people.

The OCPD subsequently commenced investigations into the controversial statement made by the State Minister of Education and she was arrested on October 8th 2018.

She was granted bail on a personal bond worth Rs 500,000 on the same day and the case was postponed to December 7th 2018. The case was then taken up in February 2019 and was again postponed to the 10th of May.

When the case was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate this morning (10), the Organized Crime Prevention Division (OCPD) informed the court that all the necessary reports on the investigations related to the case have been submitted to the Attorney General, however, his observations in this regard are yet to be received.

Representing the State Minister, President’s Counsel K.V. Thavasara told the court that his client has only made an attempt to make a remark on the downfall of the country’s legal system through her speech. Hence, the defence attorney requested the court to release his client as she has not violated any laws by making a statement as such.

Subsequently, the Colombo Chief Magistrate called for the Attorney General to inform the court on the further action to be taken regarding the suspects.

The case was then postponed to July 26th.
