One person was killed when navy personnel opened fire at a speeding car which had failed to heed orders to stop at Hunupitiya, Wattala.
Security personnel had attempted to search a vehicle at the navy checkpoint at Hunupitiya last night when the driver of the car did not heed orders and attempted to flee while also hitting one of the officers on duty.
Another officer had then opened fire at the car in question, injuring its driver who succumbed to injuriesafter being admitted to hospital.
The deceased is identified as a 34-year-old person from Negombo Road, Wattala.
Meanwhile around an hour later another car had failed to heed orders to stop at the same checkpoint prompting navy personnel to open fire at the vehicle as it attempted to flee.
The driver of the vehicle was injured in the shooting and has been admitted to hospital.
Preliminary inquiries have revealed that both drivers were heavily under the influence of alcohol.
Wattala Police is conducting further investigations.
