Bangladesh made a competitive 259-8 in 50 overs after being put into bat by Sri Lanka in the first one-day international at Sooryaweva Stadium in Hambantota. Bangladesh made their third highest one-day total against Sri Lanka in 31 matches propelled by a century from Tamim Iqbal (112) and a belligerent 73 off 59 balls from Nasir Hossain.

 

After a steady start Bangladesh slumped to 63 for three by the 13th over.

 

Mahmudullah (29) put them back on track with a 66-run stand for the forth wicket with Tamim.

 

But they struggled to force the pace in the middle overs scoring only 21 runs in the batting Powerplay.

 

Bangladesh suffered another collapse losing three wickets for seven runs in eight balls including Tamim Iqbal as they crashed to 211 for seven after 45 overs.

 

Tamim hit 10 fours and a six during his knock of 112 off 136 balls.

 

But Nasir Hossain held the tail together smashing three sixes and six boundaries as Bangladesh scored 48 runs in the last five overs.

 

Kulasekera went for 17 in one over with his final spell of two overs costing 25 runs while even Malinga was not spared conceding 30 runs in four overs though capturing two wickets.

 

Mathews finished with two for 36 and Malinga two for 51.

 

Kulasekera’s nine overs went for 67 claiming a wicket while spinner Senanayake and Thisara Perera got a wicket apiece.
