Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews won the toss and elected to bat against New Zealand in a group A match of the Champions Trophy in Cardiff on Sunday.
This is the first match for both teams in the eight-nation tournament.
England and Australia are the other two sides in the group, from which two will advance to the semi-finals.
England beat Australia in their opening game on Saturday.
