When Sri Lanka take on India in the Tri-series final on Thursday, all eyes will be on Mahela Jayawardene.

The 36-year old batsman will be playing his 400th ODI on Thursday, becoming the second cricketer from Sri Lanka (after Sanath Jayasuriya) to reach the milestone. And, talking about World cricket, he would be the third cricketer to reach the 400 club right after Jayasuriya and Sachin Tendulkar.

This would certainly be a big moment for the Island. Considered one of the finest batsmen of the world, Jayawardene has scored 11237 runs in 399 ODI appearances and the senior cricketer would be hoping to make the most of it in the final.

While Sachin has made 463 ODI appearances, Jayasuriya’s figure reached to 445. But now that both of them have retired from the ODI scene, Jayawardene would become the only player from the current crop to reach such a milestone.

After becoming the first fielder to claim 200 catches in ODI, the former captain would now add a new feather on his cap. Having played for the island country for more than a decade now, Jayawardene knows the importance of playing the four hundredth game, and perhaps that’s why he would be eager to tame India and take the Tri-series back home.
