Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara, who was sent on compulsory leave, has been granted bail by the Colombo High Court. 

The revision bail application filed by the IGP, who is charged with criminal negligence of duty by failing to prevent the Easter Sunday terror attacks despite having received intelligence information in advance, was taken up before Colombo HC Judge Adithya Patabendige this morning (5).

Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, informed the court today that there was no objection to releasing the defendant on bail.

Accordingly the court ordered the accused released on a cash bail of Rs 250,000 and two personal bails of Rs 2.5 million each while a condition was set that both co-singers of the bail should be residents of Colombo District.

The High Court Judge also prohibited IGP Pujith Jayasundara from traveling abroad without the prior approval of the court while he was ordered to hand over his passport to the court. 

The judge warned the defendant against influencing any of the witnesses in the case and also imposed a condition that he appears before the Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on the final Sunday of every month. 

The HC Judge ordered that a copy of the order be forwarded to the Registrar of the Colombo Magistrate’s Court as well. 

Meanwhile former Defence Secretary, who was arrested and remanded in connection with the same charge, was also ordered released on bail by the court earlier today.
