The Cabinet of Ministers have approved a proposal to establish separate units with relevant facilities within selected government hospitals in the country to issue medical certificates in the process of issuing driving licenses for light vehicles.

The government says that including the National Transport Medical Institute there are 150 base hospitals and district hospitals with facilities of conducting medical examinations that is included in the medical certificate issued by the National Transport Medical Institute at present for issuance of motor vehicles transport licenses. 

“However, the commuters have no opportunity for getting all the tests done at one venue when issuing relevant medical certificates by those hospitals.” 

“Therefore, it has been identified that a respective unit for the purpose is suitable to be established in the government hospital,” the co-cabinet spokesman said today. 

Accordingly, the Minister of Transport Services Management has submitted a proposal to the Cabinet of Ministers to establish units with relevant facilities  within the government hospitals so that all the services can be obtained from one venue. 

Considering the circumstances, approval of the Cabinet of Ministers was granted for taking necessary actions to amend the Motor Traffic Act No. 8 of 2009 entrusting power to the medical practitioners registered under the Medical Ordinance to issue medical certificates those considered in issuing the driving licenses, the spokesman said.
