
Four gazette notifications pertaining to the upcoming General Election will be issued tonight (03), says the Chairman of Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya.
Convening a media briefing in Kandy today (03), the elections chief mentioned that these gazette notifications will be on the symbols of political parties, returning officers, the number of candidates accepted for each district and the bond for each candidate.
He noted that political appointments, distributing goods will be halted with immediate effect as the general election has been announced, adding that a public officer cannot be transferred unless there is a disciplinary action or an urgent need.
Deshapriya stated that the Election Commission is facing a dire situation as the month of April has 10 public holidays out of the 25 working days, however, assured that they would work untiringly in this regard.
The 8th Parliament was dissolved with effect from midnight yesterday as per the powers vested on the President.
Accordingly, the General Election 2020 was declared to be held on the 25th of April and nominations for the election will be called for from the 12th to the 19th of March.
