President Gotabaya Rajapaksa inspected the progress of the Kalutara North Calido beach Development Project, today (08).

Under the project, which was launched as a remedy to the erosion of the beach in Kalutara North due to encroaching waves, the coastal conservation dredges sand from deep sea, stated President’s Media Division.

The project is carried out under three stages while the first phase will see the construction of an artificial beach, 2 km long and 25 m wide. Nearly 300,000 cubic meters of sand will be used for the filling process.

The 500-meter section has already been completed and Chief Engineer of Coastal Development Sujeewa Ranawaka informed the President that the first phase is expected to be completed within two weeks.

The second phase will be a 1-kilometer artificial beach in Angulana and the third phase will entail a 500-meter beach in Mount Lavinia.
All three phases of the project could be completed by the 20th of April 20, stated Ranawaka.

President’s attention was also drawn to the daily city cleaning process around Moratuwa, and Panadura. The President immediately informed the representatives of the local government bodies and the police on the unsatisfactory cleaning process in the cities. 

President Rajapaksa also instructed officials to carry out an immediate investigation into the failure to keep proper daily cleaning services and to clean up the city as soon as possible.
