Student ragged at J’pura University still in ICU

The first-year student of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura who was hospitalized in critical condition over injuries caused by an alleged ragging incident continues to receive treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital.

A police team is currently conducting an investigation on the matter and three students have been identified in connection with the incident, stated the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University.

On March 05, Pasindhu Lakshan, a first-year student at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura was admitted to the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital over injuries in an incident at the university premises.

The elder brother of the student claims that senior students at the university had pushed a tractor tire at his brother which had resulted in critical internal injuries to his head.

Reportedly, the incident had caused injuries to the student’s brain.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Higher Education visited the injured student at the hospital, yesterday (10).

Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof. Sudantha Liyanage told Ada Derana that he has received the report of the preliminary investigation carried out into the incident by the university administration.

On March 05, the final party marking the end of the ragging season had been held and students had stayed back at the university premises until about 1 am, according to Prof. Liyanage.

If the relevant students are found guilty of the incident, their studentship will be completely revoked, added to the Acting Vice-Chancellor.

Further, the University of Sri Jayawardenapura has decided to sponsor the injured student if he is in the need of receiving treatment abroad.

Meanwhile, Senior DIG of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon visited the scene of the incident yesterday. Police have already recorded statements from several university staff.

It has been identified that three students had been involved in the tire incident, stated Liyanage.

Meanwhile, the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) and the Students Union of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, holding a press conference, stated that the accident faced by Pasindu Lakshan could have been caused by negligence.
