All educational tours and field trips will be suspended temporarily due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) threat that prevails in the country, says the Ministry of Education.
This measure has been taken under the directive of Minister of Education Dullas Alahapperuma.
A Sri Lankan national was tested positive for the deadly virus within the country on Tuesday and he is currently receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Angoda.
It was reported that this coronavirus patient, who had been accompanying a group of Italian tourists as a tour guide, had travelled to multiple locations across the island.
Accordingly, the Education Ministry has instructed the principals of every school to put all educational tours and field trips on hold until further notice.
The Ministry has urged the public to adhere to the instructions given by the government taking into consideration the prevailing health concerns.
In order to contain the spread of virus in the country, the government has put many preventive measures in place, including 14-day mandatory quarantine for passengers arriving from coronavirus-hit countries such as Italy, South Korea and Iran.
Meanwhile, two other individuals who are suspected to be infected with the virus were admitted to the Polonnaruwa Hospital this morning (12).
