
Sri Lanka Police says that nearly 1,600 persons have been arrested over the weekend for violating the curfew imposed across the country to control the spread of Coronavirus.
Accordingly a total of 1,589 persons have been arrested across the island between 6.00 p.m. on Friday (20) to 10.00 p.m. yesterday (22) for violating the curfew.
Meanwhile 362 vehicles including motorcycle and three-wheelers have also been taken into custody, police said.
Police said that a majority of the arrests were for loitering along the roads while people have also been arrested over incidents of gathering and consuming alcohol, traveling by vehicle on the roads, keeping restaurants open, behaving in an unruly manner on the roads while intoxicated and engaging in trading.
