A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition has been filed at the Supreme Court demanding the release of Attorney-at-Law Hejaz Hizbullah, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the 2019 Easter attacks.
Lawyer Gauri Thavarasa filed the relevant petition naming six individuals including Acting Inspector General of Police, Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Chief Inspector CID Karunatilake and the Attorney General as its defendants.
The petitioner points out that while her client Attorney-at-Law Hejaz, was arrested by the CID on May 14, no reasons were given for his arrest.
She also said that Hizbullah’s lawyers have not been given a reasonable opportunity to counsel him either.
Although the Police Media Spokesperson declared that Hizbullah was arrested over the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks, the Petitioner claims that her client has no connection to the said attack.
Thereby, the petitioner has sought a ruling that the arrest of lawyer Hijaz Hizbullah has violated his fundamental rights.
The petitioner has further requested the Supreme Court to issue an order to produce her client before the Supreme Court and an appropriate court, and an order releasing him from custody.
