President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has donated the equivalent of three months of his salary to the COVID-19 Healthcare and Social Security Fund, says the President’s Media Division (PMD).

The relevant cheque has been handed over to the Secretary to the President P.B. Jayasundera today (14) at the Presidential Secretariat.

President Rajapaksa set up a special fund named ‘COVID-19 Healthcare and Social Security Fund’ in March, to strengthen the mitigation activities aimed at controlling the spread of virus outbreak in the country and related social welfare programs.

Under the instructions on the President, Rs. 100 million from the President’s Fund was credited to the Fund as the first donation.

With corporate and individual donations and direct deposits, the COVID-19 Fund surpassed Rs. 915 million on Wednesday (13).

Donations to this special fund have been exempted from tax and foreign exchange regulations.

In addition, a media campaign titled ‘Itukama’ was launched on Wednesday (13) as the fund-raising initiative for the COVID-19 Fund.
