Sangakkara becomes 2nd highest ODI run-getter

Former Sri Lankan captain and the pillar on which the team stands on became the second highest run scorer in One-Day Internationals (ODI), overtaking Australia’s World Cup winning captain Ricky Ponting in the first match of the ICC World Cup 2015 against New Zealand.

Sangakkara was only marginally behind Ponting just before the match started. Sangakkara has been in Bradman-esque form over the last two years, which has also coincided with Sri Lanka crossing many milestones, including the ICC World T20 last year; after which Sangakkara bid adieu to the shortest format of the game.

Despite marching ahead of Ponting, Sangakkara is miles behind Sachin Tendulkar, who still tops the list with 18, 426 runs and the former has only two matches left to touch 400 matches, which he should complete during the tournament.

Sangakkara is also only three fifties behind Sachin’s fifty record. Sachin has 96 of them while Sanga is three behind at 93 but the form that the southpaw has been in recent times promises plenty of fireworks during the tournament.
