
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says that he is committed to protecting marine ecosystems that are threatened with extinction due to human activity.
He stated this issuing a statement on the occasion of World Oceans Day which is celebrated today (June 08).
The ocean is the origin of life as shown in evolution of humankind, Rajapaksa said. 70% of the entire stratosphere is covered by ocean water. Preserving the natural ecosystems of the oceans is essential to the survival of mankind, he said.
“I am committed to protecting marine ecosystems that are threatened with extinction due to human activity.”
“I also look forward to exploring the oceans surrounding Sri Lanka in accordance with my ‘Vision of Prosperity’ policy statement,” he added.
This year’s theme for World Ocean Day is ‘Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean’. On this day, people hold several events, seminars, rallies to raise awareness about oceans. But due to the coronavirus outbreak, this year’s celebrations will be held online.
