A group of one hundred parliamentarians of the ruling party have signed and submitted a letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa calling for an investigation into the release of former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen’s brother, Riyaj Bathiudeen.
Riyaj Bathiudeen, who had been arrested for allegedly having direct links to terrorists involved in the Easter Sunday attacks, was recently released by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) due lack of evidence.
He had been taken into custody in Puttalam on the 14th of April this year allegedly over 07 telephone conversations with Insaf Ahmed, the bomber who carried out a suicide bombing at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo.
However, a letter signed by 100 MPs of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) against the release of Riyaj Bathiudeen by the CID was presented to the President and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees on Friday (09).
The letter claims that the CID had released MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s brother on September 30 without even producing him before a court despite the uncovering of strong evidence against him.
The SLPP parliamentarians call for a full investigation into the CID’s “arbitrary” actions and also for the re-arrest of Riyaj Bathiudeen for aiding terrorists.
