Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia is to be renamed after Darren Sammy following the West Indies’ thrilling triumph at the World Twenty20, the country’s prime minister has announced.

Captain Sammy became the first man to lead his team to two World T20 titles, with Carlos Brathwaite’s sensational four sixes in the final over clinching a four-wicket victory over England in the final.

And the 32-year-old has now been recognised in his home country, lending his name to the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium.
A stand will be renamed in honour of opener Johnson Charles, who is also set to receive a plot of land.

“Both are fitting tributes to the hard work and dedication of the players who just completed an exciting victory to win the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 Men’s title,” read a West Indies Cricket Board statement.

“The honour is fitting and we salute the players.”

Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium has a capacity of 15,000 and has hosted several international matches, including fixtures at both the 2007 Cricket World Cup and the 2010 World T20.
