Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana says 22 police officers including Special Task Force (STF) officers were tested positive for Covid-19.

Speaking to ‘Derana Aruna’ this morning (30), he said more than 400 police officers have been directed to the quarantine procedure.

He explained that these police officers were exposed to the novel coronavirus with the outbreak at the Peliyagoda Fish Market.

“There are separate quarantine centres for police officers and the police hospitals at Punanai and Kundasale have been reserved to treat the police officers who contracted the virus.”

Under the directives of the Acting Inspector General of Police, all necessary measures have been taken to prevent the spread of the virus among the police officers, DIG Rohana continued.

Speaking on the death of the OIC of Biyagama Police, he said it was revealed that the 52-year-old officer had been receiving treatment for several chronic diseases. “He had fallen ill while attending a conference last evening and passed away upon admission to Kiribathgoda Hospital. The post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted today.”
