A total of 143 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds have been allocated for COVID-19 patients island-wide, said Deputy Director-General of Health Services, Dr. Hemantha Herath.

According to data, only 03 of them are currently occupied, he added.

“If this spreads to vulnerable persons, the use of these ICU beds will increase. Subsequently, these ICU beds will be completely occupied in a short time.

Currently, there is no overflow of needs for ICU beds, at IDH, or anywhere else.

IDH often admits patients who may have complications. We try our best to leave room for emergency patients at the IDH.

However, as of 10 pm last night (31), only three ICU beds have been used for COVID-19 patients in the whole of Sri Lanka. IDH has 10 ICU beds as far as I know. I have not yet received information that these 03 occupied beds are of the IDH.

Even so, there is no congestion for the ICU beds at IDH. But I don’t know if sometimes high-risk patients had been put in ICU beds for monitoring.”
