Sri Lanka saw another surge in its Covid-19 figures yesterday (24) with 459 persons testing positive for the virus.

Department of Government Information said 458 of them are close contacts of earlier cases linked to the Peliyagoda cluster. The remaining one was identified as an arrival from Qatar.

The new development has brought the total number of Covid-19 cases confirmed in the country to 20,967. Infections grew substantially after a new cluster emerged from the Brandix apparel factory in Minuwangoda in early October. As the numbers continued to soar, the Peliyagoda fish market became the new epicentre of contagion.
