For the third straight Olympic Games, Jamaica has won gold in the Women’s 100M, although it was a first-time Olympian who secured the win this time round.

Elaine Thompson dethroned fellow Jamaican sprint superstar Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to win the gold medal in 10.71 seconds.

Fraser-Pryce, who has been struggling all season with a toe injury, finished third with a season’s best 10.86 seconds.

She had hoped to become the first woman to win three consecutive gold medals in the 100M at the Olympics.

Both athletes are from the MVP Track Club based in Jamaica’s capital.

Tori Bowie of the USA today finished second in 10.83 seconds.

Jamaica, in the meantime, is also hoping to again win the Men’s 100M on Sunday (August 14) when sprint legend Usain Bolt competes. Also in that race, will be Jamaica’s Yohan Blake, who is the world’s second fastest man.

Blake, in the London Olympics back in 2012, finished behind Bolt to win silver in both the 100M and 200M events.

He then suffered a long-term injury, but is back in time for the 2016 Olympic Games underway in Rio, Brazil.
