Classy centuries from Shaun Marsh and Steve Smith have lifted Australia before they stuttered again to leave the third Test against Sri Lanka delicately balanced.
At tea on day three in Colombo, the tourists are 4-316, still 39 runs behind the home side's first innings of 355.
Marsh (130) and Smith (119) took command, sharing in a 246-run partnership that boosted Australia's hopes of their first Test win in the subcontinent since 2011.
It was the highest second-wicket stand for Australia in Tests against Sri Lanka.
