Zimbabwe were bowled out for 272 in the first innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Harare Sports Club on Monday.

Stand-in skipper Rangana Herath picked up 5 wickets for 89 runs while Dilruwan Perera finished with figures of 3/51.

Herath joined an elite list of bowlers as Sri Lanka took a 334-run lead against Zimbabwe on day three of the second Test in Harare.

The hosts, resuming on Tuesday on 126 for two, were bowled out for 272 for a first-innings deficit of 232, with Herath registering figures of five for 89.

That saw the Sri Lanka captain become only the third player to take a five-wicket haul against all nine Test-playing opposition nations, after compatriot Muttiah Muralitharan and South African Dale Steyn.

Zimbabwe - who lost their last five wickets for 19 runs after Brian Chari contributed 80, Craig Ervine 64 and Sean Williams 58 - were not made to follow on, and subsequently caused the tourists some problems with the ball.

Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis, Upul Tharanga and Dhananjaya de Silva were all dispatched, with Carl Mumba accounting for three of those, as Sri Lanka slumped to 84 for four.

But opener Dimuth Karunaratne held firm to reach 54 not out by stumps, with his side on 102 for four.

An unbroken century stand between Brian Chari and Craig Ervine gave Zimbabwe a solid start after Asela Gunaratne’s maiden Test hundred had carried Sri Lanka to 504 on the second day of the Test.

Playing just his second Test, Gunaratne scored 116 to marshal the tail to good effect and frustrate the Zimbabwean bowlers, before his dismissal brought the end of the Sri Lankan innings on the stroke of tea.
