AB de Villiers trusted history when he chose to set Sri Lanka a target in the fourth ODI of a series South Africa have already won. In day-night contests at Newlands, 22 of 28 games have been won by the team batting first, which will not be good news for a Sri Lankan side that has underwhelmed considerably.

The visitors have been unable to post a total of over 200 in the three tries so far. Dinesh Chandimal, who has gone the entire tour without making a half-century has been left out. Niroshan Dickwella has been charged with wicketkeeping duties, while Sandun Weerakkody has been drafted back into the XI to open the batting. Sri Lanka made a change to their bowling attack too, leaving out Suranga Lakmal for Nuwan Kulasekara instead.

South Africa’s two changes were also in the bowling department with Wayne Parnell given another opportunity on his new home ground, in place of Chris Morris. Dwaine Pretorius, the Man of the Match from Johannesburg, retained his place while left-arm wristspinner Tabraiz Shamsi made his first appearance in the series, surprisingly, alongside Imran Tahir. South Africa opted for two spinners and placed Andile Phehlukwayo on the bench.

In special attendance at the match are Western Cape fire-fighters, whose efforts to contain bush blazes around the area, are being celebrated today.

South Africa: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 Farhaan Behardien, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Dwaine Pretorious, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Imran Tahir, 11 Tabraiz Shamsi

Sri Lanka 1 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 2 Sandun Weerakoody, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Upul Tharanga (capt), 5 Dhananjaya de Silva, 6 Asela Gunaratne, 7 Sachith Pathirana, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Lahiru Madushanka, 10 Lahiru Kumara, 11 Lakshan Sandakan
