Two members of Kolonnawa Urban Council have been taken into custody in connection with a theft, says DIG Ajith Rohana.

According to the police spokesman, the duo was arrested on charges of stealing a machine installed at a store in Meetotamulla belonging to the Paddy Marketing Board.

The arrest has been made by the officers of Wellampitiya Police on Tuesday (June 15) based on a complaint received in this regard.

The duo, aged 50 and 52 years, is expected to be produced before Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court later today.

Legal action will be sought against them under the provisions of the Penal Code and the Public Property Act.

The individuals who purchased the said machine from the urban council members and the one who transported it have also been apprehended, the police spokesman said further.

UPDATE: The two urban councillors, arrested for stealing a machine belonging to the Paddy Marketing Board, have been granted bail.

A total of four suspects, including two who allegedly purchased and transported the stolen item, had been taken into custody by the Wellampitiya Police.

When they were produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court earlier today, Additional Magistrate Bandara Nelumdeniya ordered to release the suspects on bail.

Reportedly, the suspects have obtained Rs. 171,000 from selling the said stolen machine.
