A specialist doctor from the National Hospital Chest Unit has examined General (retired) Sarath Fonseka this morning and has given an assurance that his health condition is satisfactory, states a media release from the Sri Lanka Army Headquarters.

This doctor was joined by a specialist doctor from the Sri Lanka Navy and another doctor who attends daily to Gen. Fonseka this morning (April 05) at the Sri Lanka Navy Headquarters premises, states Military spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasinghe.

He further adds that this was as a result of Gen. Fonseka’s wife Anoma Fonseka and several others claiming that the retired General’s health had deteriorated and that the authorities were unconcerned about it.

Following the examination this morning, the physicians had stated that there has been no adverse change in Gen. Fonseka’s health conditions and that he was in similar condition as when he was taken into detention. They had also advised the authorities to continue with the same medical treatment given to the General so far, states the spokesman.

Recently, Mrs. Fonseka had appealed to Sri Lanka Army Commander Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya to allow a specialist doctor to examine her husband. This was in response to such a request, states Maj. Gen. Samarasinghe.

The baseless accusations by certain sections that the detained General was not being provided with necessary medical attention have severely tarnished the reputation of the Navy doctors, the Military spokesman states.
