After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka lost their openers early as pacer Jofra Archer removed Dimuth Karunaratne in his first over while Kusal Perera was caught by Moeen Ali off Chris Woakes bowling.
Avishka Fernando fell one run short of his fifty as he was scalped by Mark Wood and was caught at third man by Adil Rashid.
Spinner Adil Rashid struck twice in consecutive balls to dismiss Kusal Mendis (46) and Jeeven Mendis (1) which left Sri Lanka reeling at 133/5.
Archer claimed two more wickets as he dismissed and Dhananjaya de Silva (29) and Thisara Perera (2).
Isuru Udana (6) was caught by Root at mid-on off Wood’s bowling.
Angelo Mathews (85*) and Nuwan Pradeep (1) were at the crease.
Earlier, Lankan captain Karunaratne won the toss and elected to bat against the hosts.
England have eight points from five matches, while Sri Lanka have four from five matches.
