MPs of Samagi Jana Balawegaya will boycott the parliamentary sessions this week as the topics taken up for discussion are non-relevant to the current economic crisis, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says.

His remarks came during the parliamentary sessions today which commenced at 10.00 a.m.

Speaking further, the Opposition Leader said the incumbent government led by the President and the Prime Minister has failed and it has not addressed any of the issues faced by the general public.

This is a result of the two-year authoritarian rule, Premadasa said adding that there are no constructive solutions any of the proposals put forwarded by the government.

Later, MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that the MPs of National People’s Power (NPP) too will boycott the parliamentary sessions.

Speaking further he said PM Ranil Wickremesinghe has become the “spokesperson” of the crisis in the country.

Meanwhile, due to the Opposition’s announcement that it will boycott this week’s sittings, the independent parliamentarians have decided to move the adjournment motion pertaining to the prevailing health issues of the country which was scheduled to be moved by the Opposition for the purpose of taking up for debate tomorrow (June 22), the Communications Department of the Parliament said in a statement.

Following the adjournment of Parliament tomorrow, it is scheduled to re-convene on Monday, July 4th.

Time has been allocated from 10.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. for 50 Questions for Oral Answers which could not be taken up in Parliament due to various reasons.
